Best Traditional Kava Tea Recipe

Step 1:  Mix your kava root powder with warm water together in a large bowl. Use at least two (2) cups of water for every one (1) cup of kava. To insure your water is warm enough, We recommend that you also add about a tablespoon of lecithin* if you so desire.

Hint: Soak the Kava for a minimum of 20-30 minutes before pressing.

Step 2:  Press or Squeeze the soaked kava through our Kava Muslin Bag (alternative strainers include a gallon paint strainer, cheesecloth or nylon stocking). Take your soaked Kava/water mixture and place it in the strainer bag and then squeeze out the Kava juice. Hold the edges together so that none of the Kava powder escapes.  The method of squeezing is similar to wringing out a wash cloth. After you are done squeezing, remove your Kava Root mixture from the squeeze bag and add it back in to your Kava Tea/Juice, stir together and then repeat the squeezing process a second time.  The squeeze Kava tea/juice should take on the appearance similar to coffee with cream.

Step 3:  If any Kava pulp or Kava pieces remain in your Kava tea after the squeezing process, we recommend that you strain your Kava Tea through a fine mesh steel strainer or strain it again through a clean strainer again without squeezing enough so the cloth retains any pulp or pieces of Kava.

Step 4:  Drink up! Some customers like to drink the Kava warm or at room temperature and others like to add ice or refrigerate and drink their Kava chilled. Traditionally, Kava tea/juice is swallowed in one or two quick gulps from coconut shell.  For seconds, and third servings it's best to space out the servings 10-15 minutes apart.  Effects are felt quite soon after drinking, but some of the kavalactone effects may not be felt for about 20 minutes. Enjoy!

*For the best kava tea/juice, add a tablespoon of lecithin granules in to some warm/hot water and let them dissolve. Then add the dissolved lecithin water to your Kava recipe while soaking the Kava. Lecithin will help emulsify and activate the kavalactones of the kava resulting in a more potent Kava juice.

How Much Kava Tea to Drink?  Each person can be different.  A common amount to drink is two to three 3-4 ounces shells/cups spaced out about 15 minutes apart.  If you have a high tolerance then increase to 5-6 ounces cups.  Recommended maximum Kava tea per day in total is 32 ounces.

Quick and Easy Blender Recipes

A Blender can replace the squeezing process.

The Basic:  2-4 tablespoons of Kava powder and 1 cup of water per serving.  Add the kava and water in to a blender and blend on high for about 3-44 minutes.  Pour the mixture through a fine strainer (cheesecloth, muslin bag, fine mesh strainer, etc. and squeeze out the liquid into a bowl/glass.  Discard the pulp and enjoy.

Honey Kava:  Add 1-2 tablespoons of honey and ice to The Basic recipe and blend again.

Black Russian:  Add 1/4 cup of chocolate syrup or cocoa and some milk to The Basic recipe and blend again.

Kava Colada:  In a blender, add 5 tablespoons of GoKava's super instant kava add a whole ice tray of frozen pineapple juice cubes and a full 8 oz. can of coconut milk, honey and vanilla to taste and blend away. This makes really delicious drinks.   You can substitute Kava root instead of super instant kava, but blend the Kava with water  first and strain (like the basic recipe), then add the cubes, coconut milk and honey.

The Veggie:  Add any fruit or vegetable juice to The Basic Recipe, strain and enjoy!

French Press Kava

Another easy recipe that provides a potent Kava juice is to use a French coffee press. Add 6-8 tablespoons of Kava powder and fill with warm water (add 1 tablespoon of Lecithin granules) and stir.  Let sit for 20-30 minutes and then press the French press plunger down slowly and steady until it will go no further.  Pour off the tea/juice and then repeat the process again with the left over pulp and add both together.  Refrigerate leftovers.

Kava Fruit Shake

Kava is also delicious in a shake.  If you’re having problems swallowing down kava just by itself with water, but you enjoy kava’s soothing effects, try this:

  • 4-6 cups of your favorite blend of frozen fruits (peaches, strawberries, cherries, huckleberries, and even blueberries)
  • 1/4-1/2 c of half-and-half
  • About 5 tbsp of sugar  (granulated or brown)
  • 4-6 tbsp. Kava root powder or 2-3 tbsp of Super Instant Kava

(1)  Blend all ingredients together, including kava.  Add water slowly if the blender is having problems with the dried fruit.  The cream should help the blender along also.  Add the Kava last.

(2) Add more creamer, water, and sugar to desired taste and consistency.

*Makes about a quart of shake, depending on how much of each ingredient added.

Breakfast Shake:  Try blending in some protein powder in the mornings.  It’s a great way to start our day, or even have a quick snack or even dessert.  Kava makes a great way to relax after a rough day.
